Five Men Arraigned and Remanded in Kirikiri for Dumping Refuse in Canal

Lagos, June 8, 2025 — Five men have been arraigned and remanded in Kirikiri Prison for illegally dumping refuse in a canal located along the Igando–Iba corridor in Lagos State. The suspects appeared before the Kirikiri Magistrate Court where they were charged with environmental pollution and public nuisance.

The court, upon hearing the charges, ordered that the accused be remanded in custody pending further investigation and trial. This action is part of the ongoing efforts by Lagos State authorities to clamp down on improper waste disposal practices that contribute to flooding and environmental degradation in the state.

Environmental experts have warned that dumping refuse in canals blocks waterways, leading to serious health and safety risks, including flooding and the spread of diseases. Lagos State government has intensified enforcement of its environmental sanitation laws to ensure a cleaner and safer environment for residents.

The accused are expected to face penalties ranging from fines to imprisonment if found guilty. This prosecution serves as a warning to others who violate environmental laws in the state.
