Flood Alert: Lagos Government Urges Immediate Evacuation in Parts of Lekki and Ikorodu

August 5, 2025 | Lagos, Nigeria — The Lagos State Government has issued a strong advisory to residents in select parts of Lekki and Ikorodu, urging them to relocate temporarily as rising water levels threaten to trigger severe flooding in the affected communities.

In a public safety announcement released on Monday, the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources raised the alarm over potential flooding due to continued heavy rainfall, compounded by blocked drainages and rising tides from the Lagos Lagoon. The areas most at risk include Sangotedo, Awoyaya, Lekki Phase II, Badore, Agungi, and parts of Ikorodu such as Owode, Agric, and Ijede.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “We are not calling for panic, but we are advising those in low-lying or previously flood-prone areas to consider moving to higher ground temporarily. Safety is our top priority.”

The advisory comes after early morning downpours on Sunday and Monday inundated several roads and residences, leaving many commuters stranded and raising fresh concerns about Lagos’ flood readiness amid intensifying climate patterns.

Emergency services, including the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), are reportedly on standby to assist with evacuation and emergency response in high-risk zones. The government also warned against indiscriminate waste disposal, which continues to block major drainage channels and worsen the impact of flash floods.

Residents are urged to stay tuned to official updates, follow weather forecasts from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), and report any critical flood signs to the Lagos emergency helplines.

The state’s proactive warning is part of its ongoing efforts to minimize disaster impact as the peak of the rainy season unfolds.
