Floods Claim 165 Lives, Affect 119,791 Nigerians in 2025 – NEMA

Nigeria’s flood crisis has taken a devastating toll this year, with 165 fatalities recorded and 119,791 persons impacted across 19 states, according to the National Emergency Management Agency.

Latest NEMA data released Friday shows the disaster has left 82 people missing, 138 injured, and displaced 43,936 persons. The floods destroyed 8,594 homes and submerged 8,278 farmlands, compounding food security concerns.

Vulnerable groups bear the heaviest burden, with 53,314 children, 36,573 women and 1,863 persons with disabilities among the affected populations. Imo, Rivers, Abia, Borno and Kaduna states recorded the highest casualties.

Other impacted states include the FCT, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bayelsa, Edo, Gombe, Jigawa, Kano, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Ondo and Sokoto. The disaster has spread across 43 local government areas, stretching emergency response capacities.

NEMA’s update comes as meteorologists warn of more heavy rainfall in coming weeks, with authorities urging flood-prone communities to relocate to higher ground. The agency continues coordinating relief efforts while appealing for additional support to address the growing humanitarian crisis.
