LAGOS, July 12, 2025 — A former Deputy Governor of Lagos State has called for the immediate cancellation of the ongoing local government elections, citing widespread irregularities, disenfranchisement, and logistical lapses.
Speaking to journalists after observing proceedings in some areas of the state, the former Deputy Governor expressed deep concern over what was described as “a clear deviation from democratic norms.” The ex-deputy governor, who chose not to mention specific local governments, alleged that the electoral process was marred by missing voting materials, late arrival of LASIEC officials, and the exclusion of several registered voters from participating.
“There is no credibility in a process where polling materials arrive hours late, officials are not available at designated units, and voters are left confused or turned back. This cannot be described as an election,” the former Deputy Governor said.
Reports from some parts of the state indicated that LASIEC officials were stranded in places like Ikosi-Isheri LCDA, forcing them to trek long distances to polling stations. There were also claims of inadequate security presence in a few locations during the early hours of the exercise.
The former Deputy Governor urged the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) to investigate all reported anomalies and immediately halt the collation of results until full transparency is ensured. He called for a rerun of the elections under stricter supervision to guarantee fairness and protect public confidence in local governance.
At the time of filing this report, LASIEC has yet to respond to the allegations.
