Brigadier-General Maharazu Tsiga (retd.) has finally been released after enduring 56 days in the hands of kidnappers, bringing an end to a prolonged ordeal that began on February 5, 2025.
The former Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps was abducted from his hometown in Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State alongside nine other residents during the February attack.
According to reports, despite his family paying a substantial ransom weeks ago, the kidnappers continued to hold Tsiga captive. Conflicting information has emerged regarding the ransom amount, with some sources claiming N60 million was paid, while a Wednesday report from Daily Trust suggests the actual figure was approximately three times higher.
A family member close to the situation revealed that after receiving the payment, the kidnappers went silent for a week before making contact. “The money was taken to them, and it was only after one week, that was on Tuesday, March 11, that they called and we heard his voice,” the source disclosed.
The source added that although the kidnappers later demanded additional money, the family did not comply with these further demands. “Nothing was actually added, and as we speak, they are in Zamfara state from where they will take the general to Abuja,” the family source stated.
A senior military official has confirmed Tsiga’s release to Daily Trust. Sources close to the family report that the retired general is in good condition despite his nearly two-month captivity.
The development brings relief to the family and associates of the former NYSC leader following weeks of uncertainty and concern about his wellbeing while in captivity.
