The Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone ‘B’ of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has reinforced its partnership with the Kano/Jigawa Command to foster improved economic growth and enhance trade operations in the region. This collaboration, which was solidified during a recent meeting between officials of both commands, aims to streamline the Customs’ efforts in curbing smuggling, enhancing trade facilitation, and boosting revenue generation in Northern Nigeria.
This strengthened cooperation comes as part of the NCS’ broader strategy to optimize operational efficiency and combat the menace of illegal trade, which has been a major challenge in Nigeria’s import and export sectors. Kano and Jigawa states, being key economic hubs in the northern region, contribute significantly to Nigeria’s agricultural exports and consumer goods trade. However, the area has also faced challenges related to the illicit movement of goods across borders, threatening both national security and economic stability.
By improving their coordination, FOU Zone ‘B’ and the Kano/Jigawa Command aim to curb the smuggling of goods such as rice, vegetable oil, and textiles, as well as reduce the flow of contraband items that undermine the national economy. The collaboration will see both units sharing vital intelligence, conducting joint operations, and deploying enhanced surveillance tactics across critical trade routes, particularly in border areas.
Customs authorities also expressed the importance of fostering stronger relationships with local stakeholders, including traders and the business community. By working hand in hand with legitimate businesses, Customs is optimistic that it will be able to strike a balance between enforcing regulations and ensuring that trade activities are not unduly hindered.
Both Commands have also committed to facilitating the efficient clearance of goods, streamlining processes for legitimate trade, and ensuring that taxes and duties are collected fairly and promptly. The enhanced partnership aims to promote economic growth in the region by eliminating the obstacles posed by illicit activities, which in turn will lead to an increase in trade revenue and national income.
In addition to boosting revenue collection, the Customs’ collaboration with the Kano/Jigawa Command is expected to have a positive ripple effect on the local economy, fostering job creation, stimulating infrastructure development, and improving the overall ease of doing business. Authorities are hopeful that through this strategic alliance, there will be a significant reduction in economic sabotage, setting the stage for sustainable development in Northern Nigeria.
The NCS has emphasized the need for continued training and capacity-building programs for officers in both commands to ensure the success of the initiative. By empowering personnel with the right tools and knowledge, Customs aims to further improve security, transparency, and efficiency in all aspects of trade within the region.
This strengthened partnership between FOU Zone ‘B’ and the Kano/Jigawa Command reflects the Nigeria Customs Service’s commitment to supporting the country’s economic development while safeguarding the integrity of its borders and trade networks.
