France Recognizes Palestinian Statehood at UN General Assembly

New York, USA – September 23, 2025

French President Emmanuel Macron officially recognized the State of Palestine on Monday during a high-level summit at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The announcement, aimed at advancing a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, was met with a standing ovation from attendees.

Speaking to the assembly, Macron stated that France’s recognition represents “the only solution that will allow for Israel to live in peace,” framing the move as a challenge to extremist groups and a reinforcement of international support for Palestinian statehood.

He also indicated that the opening of a French embassy in Palestine would depend on the release of hostages held by Hamas and the establishment of a ceasefire.

Following France’s lead, several Western countries, including the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Portugal, and Malta, formally recognized the Palestinian state during the summit.

While the gesture was widely welcomed by the international community, it drew criticism from Israel and the United States.

Israeli officials expressed concern that the recognition rewards Hamas, and U.S. officials described it as potentially undermining ongoing efforts to secure the release of hostages and maintain regional stability.

The announcement marks a significant diplomatic step for France and adds momentum to global efforts supporting a two-state solution, though practical outcomes will depend on further negotiations and developments on the ground.
