Fresh Violence Rocks Delta as Itsekiri, Urhobo Youths Clash Over Land Dispute

August 24, 2025 — Parts of Delta State were thrown into chaos on Saturday as violent clashes erupted between Itsekiri and Urhobo youths, reportedly triggered by lingering territorial disputes.

Eyewitnesses recounted that the unrest began in the early hours following a heated confrontation that spiraled into widespread violence. Several houses and properties were said to have been destroyed, with unconfirmed reports of casualties. The incident forced many residents to flee while businesses in the affected communities quickly shut down for safety.

Security operatives, including the Nigerian Army and police, have since been deployed to restore order. The Delta State Police Command confirmed the outbreak of violence, noting that investigations are ongoing to determine the root cause and bring perpetrators to justice.

Community leaders from both ethnic groups have appealed for calm, urging youths to avoid further bloodshed and instead embrace dialogue to settle their differences.

Meanwhile, the Delta State Government strongly condemned the clashes, assuring that it would collaborate with traditional rulers and security agencies to restore lasting peace and prevent a recurrence.
