At least 25 people, including a Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) official, lost their lives in two separate multiple crashes that occurred in Ogun State on Saturday, while eight others sustained injuries.
The first crash, which occurred at about 7 a.m. around the NIPCO filling station on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, involved a Mack truck with registration number SEY 363 YY, a tanker (T2900LA), and a bus (LSD 180 YA). Seven people died at the scene, while four others were injured. According to the Ogun State FRSC spokesperson, Florence Okpe, the accident was caused by the excessive speed of the Mack truck’s driver, who lost control and collided with the two other vehicles.
Okpe provided further details, saying that a total of 15 people were involved in the crash, including 13 male adults, two female adults, and four injured victims (three male adults and one female adult). The bodies of the deceased were taken to Idera Morgue in Sagamu, while the injured were rushed to Divine Touch Hospital and Glory Center Hospital in Ibafo. The vehicles were cleared from the scene to ensure smooth traffic flow.
The second accident occurred around 4 p.m. on Saturday near Mosimi, along the Sagamu-Ikorodu Road, while FRSC officers were clearing an earlier crash. According to Okpe, a vehicle with faulty brakes collided with the FRSC rescue team, leading to the death of an FRSC staff member and 18 other victims. This accident involved seven vehicles, including a Toyota Hiace bus (AGL 752 YC), a DAF truck (T14007LA), a Honda car (HT 680), another DAF truck without registration, a pick-up truck (STF 10204), a motorbike (AGG 448Q), and a Bajaj motorcycle (PKA 214 WS).
A total of 22 people were involved in the second crash, with 18 fatalities and four injuries. The injured victims were taken to Dasochris Hospital in Gbaga, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH).
FRSC Sector Commander Akinwumi Fasakin expressed deep concern over the reckless driving and the high number of accidents recorded on Saturday, attributing the incidents to excessive speed and brake failure. Fasakin urged motorists to adhere to speed limits and observe road safety signs to prevent further loss of life.
