Renowned Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Funke Akindele, has taken a significant step in empowering female creatives, training them on how to navigate and succeed in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
Speaking at a workshop themed “The Creative Blueprint” in Lagos on Friday, Akindele emphasized the importance of perseverance and resilience in building a successful career.
Overcoming Challenges in the Creative Industry
Addressing the participants, Akindele highlighted the reality of challenges in the entertainment sector, stating that success requires patience, purpose, and the ability to turn struggles into stepping stones.
“As a creative person aspiring to be successful, you need to understand that your time will come if you remain focused on your purpose. However, the journey will not be easy—you will face pain, challenges, and setbacks,” she said.
She stressed the importance of using criticism for growth, recounting how she leveraged constructive feedback early in her career.
“I read all the comments, even the harsh ones from blogs. I filter out the truth and use it to my advantage. Instead of letting criticism break you, let it push you forward.”
Passion Before Profit
Akindele advised aspiring creatives to prioritize passion over money, explaining that financial success naturally follows hard work and consistency.
“As creatives in any field, focus on multiplying your impact rather than chasing money. Keep developing your skills, and money will eventually follow.”
She further encouraged young creatives to remember their roots and use their struggles as motivation.
“Your struggles should not define you; how you rise from them should. Stay consistent, believe in yourself, and never stop working hard.”
Waje on Talent and Intellectual Property
Adding to the conversation, award-winning singer Aituaje Iruobe (Waje) stressed that talent alone is not enough for success in the entertainment industry.
She urged creatives to invest in their craft, understand the business side of the industry, and avoid selling their intellectual property without proper legal guidance.
“Creatives must engage intellectual property lawyers before signing any contract. Many musicians lose their masters because they don’t understand the implications of their agreements,” Waje warned.
A Bright Future for Female Creatives
The training session provided valuable insights into the realities of the entertainment industry, inspiring young female creatives to stay dedicated, refine their skills, and make informed decisions about their careers.
With influential figures like Funke Akindele and Waje championing mentorship, the future looks promising for women in Nollywood and the broader creative industry.
