Gateway Games: Fatodu Rallies Team Lagos Athletes Ahead of National Sports Festival

As preparations intensify for the 22nd National Sports Festival, tagged “Gateway Games,” the Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), Mr. Lekan Fatodu, has charged athletes representing Lagos State to remain focused and resolute in their pursuit of sporting excellence.

Speaking at the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Centre, Rowe Park, Yaba, Fatodu commended the athletes and their coaches for their unwavering dedication and commitment to training ahead of the national competition, which is scheduled to hold in Ogun State.

In a spirited address to the athletes, Fatodu announced the commencement of a structured “open and close camp” training format designed to enhance the team’s readiness for the event. He reiterated the Lagos State Government’s firm commitment to supporting its contingent through the provision of world-class facilities, standard equipment, and improved welfare packages.

“We understand the effort and sacrifice that go into preparing for a major tournament like this. That’s why we are prioritizing your needs—your welfare, your tools, and your morale. Lagos is proud of you, and we’re committed to ensuring you are in the best position to bring glory to our state,” Fatodu stated.

In a bid to boost morale and encourage peak performance, Fatodu unveiled a new incentive structure tagged “instant awards,” which will see athletes rewarded on the spot for outstanding performances during the competition. “We want to celebrate excellence in real-time. Your sweat and sacrifice must translate to recognition and reward,” he added.

Team Lagos captain, Olowolayemo Adewale Sikiru, speaking on behalf of the athletes, thanked the commission for its proactive leadership and expressed confidence in the team’s ability to deliver a strong showing at the festival. He assured the DG that Team Lagos athletes remain disciplined and ready to make the state proud.

The National Sports Festival, regarded as Nigeria’s ‘mini-Olympics’, will host athletes from across the federation to compete in various sporting disciplines. With high expectations and a renewed sense of purpose, Team Lagos is aiming to improve its previous outing and possibly top the medals table.

The Gateway Games are expected to showcase the best of Nigerian sports talent and further strengthen unity through competitive spirit.
