Globacom Launches Nationwide Network Upgrade After Fibre Vandalism

Telecommunications provider Globacom has embarked on a major infrastructure overhaul across Nigeria to improve service quality, following widespread damage to its fibre optic cables from road construction activities and vandalism.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the company revealed it is relocating critical fibre networks at significant cost, particularly along key routes including Auchi-Okene, Benin-Ekpoma, and Minna-Abuja highways where uncoordinated construction works disrupted connectivity. The upgrade includes deploying new base stations to expand coverage and enhance capacity in high-demand areas.

Globacom said it has already installed thousands of 4G LTE sites this year, with hundreds more underway to boost data speeds and network reliability. The project also involves modernising backhaul infrastructure through fibre and microwave technology upgrades, alongside core network improvements.

The telecom giant announced plans to add over 1,000 new sites within the next 12 months, with emphasis on LTE expansion and fibre-to-hub deployments for stronger service delivery. As part of its sustainability drive, Globacom is transitioning sites to hybrid power systems, reducing generator dependence to cut carbon emissions.

However, the company raised concerns about persistent sabotage of telecom equipment, despite its designation as critical national infrastructure. It called for stronger enforcement to protect assets.

Subscribers can expect noticeable service improvements as the upgrades near completion, Globacom said, reaffirming its commitment to delivering value amid recent tariff adjustments approved by regulators. The network refresh aims to position Globacom competitively in Nigeria’s telecoms sector while addressing customer complaints over service quality.

Industry analysts view the investment as timely, given Nigeria’s growing data consumption and the need for robust digital infrastructure to support economic activities nationwide.
