Governor Abiodun Approves Payment of 2017 Gratuities to Ogun Pensioners

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has authorised the immediate disbursement of gratuity payments to retirees who exited the state’s civil service in 2017, bringing long-awaited relief to affected senior citizens amid Nigeria’s prevailing economic difficulties.

Confirming the development, the Permanent Secretary of the Bureau of State Pensions, Mrs. Arinola Adetayo, disclosed that payment has already commenced for 840 retirees, in line with the Governor’s directive. She noted that the gesture underscores the current administration’s steadfast commitment to the welfare and dignity of retired workers in the state, particularly at a time when economic realities have made life more challenging for the elderly.

Adetayo expressed appreciation to Governor Abiodun for what she described as his continued compassion, sense of responsibility, and responsiveness to the plight of pensioners. She further appealed to those yet to receive their entitlements to remain patient, assuring them that all verified beneficiaries will be duly paid.

In a statement reacting to the release of funds, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Ogun State chapter, Comrade Waheed Oloyede, commended the state government for releasing a total sum of N6.5 billion for the payment of gratuities to both state and local government retirees. Speaking through the union’s secretary, Comrade Bola Lawal, the NUP leadership hailed the move as a fulfilment of promises made by the Governor during previous engagements with the union.

According to the NUP, the payment will significantly improve the quality of life for retirees, enabling them to meet basic needs, access healthcare services, and live out their retirement in dignity—rights the union insists should never be delayed or denied.

One of the beneficiaries, Mr. Dele Odunsi, could not hide his joy. He expressed deep gratitude to God for preserving his life to witness the moment and lauded the Governor for honouring his word. According to him, the payment symbolises not just a financial relief, but a long-awaited recognition of the years he and his colleagues dedicated to public service.

Governor Abiodun’s administration has in recent times taken steps to prioritise pension obligations, even as many state governments across the country continue to grapple with arrears of unpaid entitlements. The payment of the 2017 gratuity marks a significant milestone in Ogun State’s efforts to reduce its backlog and affirm its commitment to treating retired public servants with the respect and care they deserve.
