In a grand gesture to celebrate sporting excellence and patriotism, Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has announced a reward package for Super Falcons star, Francisca Ordega, in recognition of her outstanding contributions to Nigerian football and her representation of the state on the global stage.
The governor, while hosting the footballer at the Government House in Makurdi, disclosed that Ordega would receive a cash gift of ₦50 million, a fully furnished three-bedroom bungalow in a prime area of the state capital, and the renaming of a street in her honour. The street, formerly known as Old Otukpo Road in Makurdi, will now bear the name “Francisca Ordega Way” as a lasting tribute to her sporting legacy.
Governor Alia praised the Super Falcons forward for her dedication, discipline, and impact on the international scene, noting that her career has not only brought glory to Nigeria but also pride to Benue State. He described her as a shining example to young people, particularly girls, across the country who dream of making a mark in sports.
He further stated that Ordega’s achievements have broken barriers and placed Nigeria on the map in women’s football, with her appearances in multiple FIFA Women’s World Cup tournaments and stints with top football clubs across Europe and Asia standing as proof of her talent and resilience.
Francisca Ordega, visibly overwhelmed by the honour, expressed deep appreciation to the governor and the people of Benue State. She pledged to continue being a good ambassador of the state and the country, using her platform to inspire the next generation of female athletes.
The recognition comes at a time when calls for greater investment and reward in women’s sports are gaining momentum across Nigeria. Governor Alia’s gesture is being viewed by many as a significant step towards encouraging excellence and acknowledging the efforts of athletes who continue to raise the nation’s flag high.
Ordega, a native of Gboko in Benue State, has been a key figure in Nigerian women’s football for over a decade, known for her pace, flair, and leadership both on and off the pitch. Her decorated career has earned her national and international accolades, making her one of the most celebrated female footballers in Africa.
