Governor Sanwo-Olu Commissions Rack Centre’s 12MW Data Centre: A Leap Forward for Nigeria’s Digital Economy

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has officially commissioned the new Rack Centre LGS2 data facility, a state-of-the-art 12-megawatt data centre located in Lagos. This significant development marks a major milestone in Nigeria’s digital transformation, positioning Lagos as a leading technological hub in West Africa.

The LGS2 facility, valued at $120 million, is one of the largest data centres in Nigeria and doubles the country’s current data centre capacity. It is designed as a hyper-scale and AI-ready facility, equipped to support cloud computing, data storage, artificial intelligence solutions, and digital content management. This infrastructure is crucial for meeting the sophisticated needs of modern businesses, both local and international, seeking reliable digital solutions in Nigeria.

Rack Centre’s CEO, Lars Johannisson, described the facility as a “monumental leap” for Nigeria’s digital infrastructure, emphasizing its commitment to technological advancement and sustainable digitization. The centre boasts a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) rating of 1.35, the lowest in West Africa, making it an environmentally friendly and efficient choice for businesses. Additionally, the facility is powered by natural gas, which offers cost stability and reduces reliance on diesel, further enhancing its sustainability credentials.

The commissioning of this data centre is part of Lagos State’s broader strategy to enhance its digital infrastructure. Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted that the project will help establish Lagos as a major tech player in West Africa, attracting more tech investments and creating opportunities for start-ups and businesses to host their data locally rather than abroad.

Furthermore, Lagos is witnessing a surge in data centre construction, with four new facilities currently under development, including one by Google. This expansion underscores the state’s growing appeal to global tech companies and its commitment to becoming a digital powerhouse in Africa. As Nigeria continues to navigate its digital future, initiatives like the Rack Centre LGS2 facility are pivotal in driving economic growth and positioning the country as a key player in the region’s tech landscape.
