In a determined bid to stem the tide of road traffic accidents and restore discipline among motorists in Nasarawa State, Governor Abdullahi Sule has officially flagged off a statewide traffic enforcement drive christened ‘Operation Sanity’. The campaign, launched in partnership with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), is designed to address the growing menace of reckless driving, enforce compliance with traffic laws, and cultivate a lasting culture of road safety across the state.
The unveiling of the operation took place on Tuesday, May 27, in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital, during a high-profile mobile court session. The event attracted key figures in the state’s leadership, including the Deputy Governor, Secretary to the State Government, Head of Civil Service, top FRSC officials led by the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, and members of the State Executive Council.
Governor Sule, while addressing the dignitaries and stakeholders, declared an end to the era of impunity on the roads of Nasarawa. He stated emphatically that the government could no longer remain passive in the face of preventable loss of lives caused by avoidable road mishaps. He described ‘Operation Sanity’ as a firm and strategic intervention aimed at enforcing order and discipline on the highways.
“We will not stand idly by while lives are lost to preventable crashes,” the governor asserted. “Through Operation Sanity, we are sending a clear and unambiguous message that reckless driving and disregard for traffic laws will no longer be tolerated in Nasarawa State.”
He went on to assure that the state government will fully support the FRSC in implementing the operation and committed to using all available public enlightenment platforms to drive home the importance of safe and responsible road use. He urged residents to embrace the campaign as a collective responsibility and play active roles in making the state’s roads safer for all.
Speaking on the scope of the initiative, FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed described ‘Operation Sanity’ as more than a routine enforcement campaign. According to him, it is a multi-faceted approach that combines aggressive public awareness campaigns, firm enforcement of traffic regulations, and the establishment of mobile courts to ensure swift prosecution of offenders.
“This operation is not just about arresting errant drivers. It’s about creating a safer, more organised road environment,” he explained. “We are engaging stakeholders from the transport sector, civil society, and security agencies in a united front to address the root causes of road crashes and cultivate behavioural change among road users.”
He reiterated that one of the key objectives of the initiative is to position Nasarawa as a leading example in road safety management nationwide, while also supporting the broader goal of driving economic growth through improved transportation systems and safer roads.
As the campaign gets underway, optimism is high among residents that ‘Operation Sanity’ will usher in a new era of order, accountability, and respect for traffic rules. With strong political will and institutional backing, stakeholders are hopeful that the state’s roads will become safer, lives will be saved, and the culture of road recklessness will be gradually erased.
