Green Africa Acquires First-Owned Aircraft After Temporary Flight Suspension

Nigerian airline Green Africa has acquired its first-ever owned aircraft, marking a major milestone for the domestic carrier as it navigates operational challenges.

The newly acquired aircraft, an ATR 72-500 with the registration 5N-GAB, is expected to commence operations once all necessary regulatory approvals are secured.

Temporary Suspension Due to Lessor Issues
The acquisition comes just days after Green Africa announced a temporary suspension of flight operations, citing unresolved issues with its aircraft lessor. It was gathered that the airline’s leasing partner withdrew its aircraft, prompting the need for an alternative solution.

Despite attempts to minimize disruptions, the airline informed passengers that flights would remain grounded until after the Eid-al-Fitr holidays.

In a statement, Green Africa expressed regret over the situation and reassured customers that it was working to restore operations as swiftly as possible.

Aircraft Acquisition Funded by Access Bank
To solidify its operations, Green Africa secured funding from Access Bank to purchase its own aircraft, a move seen as a step toward greater financial and operational stability.

Founder & CEO of Green Africa, Babawande Afolabi, described the acquisition as a “significant milestone” in the airline’s mission to provide safe, affordable, and reliable air travel to more Nigerians.

“This incoming aircraft will be pivotal as we thoughtfully navigate the next phase of our journey to bring safe, affordable, and reliable air travel to a broader group of customers in the region,” Afolabi stated.

Access Bank Backs Green Africa’s Growth
Speaking on the partnership, Access Bank’s Managing Director/CEO, Roosevelt Ogbonna, emphasized the bank’s commitment to supporting innovative and high-potential Nigerian businesses.

“As one of the largest financial institutions on the continent, we take pride in backing young businesses that have the potential to redefine their industries,” Ogbonna said. “We are impressed with Green Africa’s story and excited about its future trajectory. We are delighted to support the acquisition of its first owned aircraft.”

Next Steps for Green Africa
With its newly acquired aircraft, Green Africa is set to resume operations, strengthening its presence in Nigeria’s aviation sector. Industry experts believe this move will enhance the airline’s sustainability and reduce dependence on leased aircraft, a common challenge for many domestic carriers.

Passengers and stakeholders now await further updates on when Green Africa will officially return to the skies.
