Pep Guardiola has paid tribute to Kevin De Bruyne, describing him as one of the greatest midfielders in Premier League history. De Bruyne announced on Friday that he will be leaving Manchester City at the end of the season, bringing an end to a highly successful eight-year spell at the club.
Guardiola hailed De Bruyne’s consistency and durability during his peak years, which allowed City to dominate English football and win numerous trophies. “He is one of the greatest midfielders ever to play in this country and for this club – there is no doubt,” Guardiola said.
De Bruyne has been instrumental in City’s success, winning 14 major trophies, including six Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2023. He has scored 106 goals and provided 174 assists in 413 appearances for City.
Guardiola praised De Bruyne’s vision, goals, and assists, which have made him a unique player. “His assists, goals, vision in final third is so difficult to replace. Everyone can make actions for assists, (it’s) how many years and games that makes him unique,” Guardiola added.
The City manager expects De Bruyne to be recognized for his contributions to the club, possibly with a statue outside the Etihad Stadium, joining other City legends like Vincent Kompany, David Silva, and Sergio Aguero.
It remains unclear whether De Bruyne will depart at the end of the Premier League season or will continue to play for City at the Club World Cup. De Bruyne’s contract is due to expire at the end of June, while the Club World Cup runs from June 14 until July 13. Guardiola said that De Bruyne has to decide what he wants to do, and the club will have to talk to him about his future plans.
