Haramain to Host Special Lunar Eclipse Prayers on September 7 in Makkah and Madinah

Worshippers across the Islamic world are set to observe the rare Salat Al-Khusuf (eclipse prayer) on the evening of Sunday, September 7, 2025, as the Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques has confirmed that both Masjid al-Haram in Makkah and Masjid an-Nabawi in Madinah will hold congregational prayers in line with the Prophetic tradition.

According to the official announcement, the lunar eclipse prayer will take place immediately after the Maghrib prayer, as astronomical experts have forecasted a partial lunar eclipse that will be visible across parts of Saudi Arabia on the night of 15 Rabi’ al-Awwal 1447 AH, corresponding to the Gregorian calendar date of September 7, 2025.

Leading the special prayer in the two sacred mosques will be designated Imams of the Haramain, as thousands of worshippers are expected to gather for the spiritually significant event. The Salat Al-Khusuf, performed during lunar eclipses, consists of two rak’ahs and is carried out in congregation as per the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Islamic teachings regard the eclipse prayer as a moment of reflection, humility, and divine remembrance, rather than as a scientific phenomenon alone.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is reported to have led such prayers during his lifetime, reminding the ummah that eclipses are among the signs of Allah and not mere astronomical occurrences.

The eclipse is expected to begin shortly after sunset and will be partially visible over the Arabian Peninsula. The lunar phenomenon, while natural, carries significant spiritual meaning for Muslims, prompting communal prayer and supplication.

This announcement underscores the religious commitment of the Saudi authorities to uphold Islamic traditions, especially within the precincts of Islam’s holiest sites. As always, both residents and international pilgrims currently in the Kingdom are welcome to join the prayer at either of the two mosques.

Security and crowd control measures are expected to be in place to ensure smooth movement and safety, given the anticipated turnout for the rare celestial event.

For the faithful, this presents not only a chance to witness a lunar eclipse but also an opportunity to reconnect spiritually, engage in reflection, and seek forgiveness through acts of worship deeply rooted in prophetic heritage.
