Aden, Yemen | Tuesday, August 26, 2025
Torrential rains have unleashed severe flooding in Yemen’s southern port city of Aden, leaving at least 10 people injured and causing widespread damage to homes, shops, and roads. Local authorities confirmed that flash floods swept through the Al-Mualla district on August 19–20, prompting emergency measures and the deployment of rescue teams.
Governor Ahmed Hamid Lamlas directed hospitals across the city to provide urgent treatment for the injured and ordered clean-up operations in flood-hit neighborhoods. Witnesses reported submerged streets and disrupted electricity supplies in several areas.
The Yemen Meteorological Service has warned that heavy rainfall is expected to continue across coastal regions, including parts of the Red Sea and the country’s east and southwest, urging residents to avoid riverbeds, dams, and low-lying areas.
Beyond Aden, floods have claimed at least eight lives in the provinces of Hajjah, Shabwah, and Hadhramaut, where collapsing homes and swollen rivers caused further casualties. Meanwhile, Al-Hudaydah governorate recorded more than 110 millimeters of rainfall in recent days, though no confirmed flooding or damage has been reported there.
Authorities say emergency alerts remain in effect across multiple provinces as the risk of additional flash floods persists.
