Abuja, July 28, 2025 — In a significant move toward electoral reform, the House of Representatives has proposed that all five major elections in 2027—presidential, governorship, National Assembly, state assembly, and FCT area council polls—be conducted on the same day.
The proposal, which forms part of the sweeping amendments contained in the Electoral Act 2025 Bill, aims to streamline the country’s electoral process, reduce logistical challenges, and curb voter apathy. Lawmakers believe that holding all major elections on a single day will cut costs, minimize security risks, and enhance transparency in Nigeria’s democratic process.
Speaking during plenary, key sponsors of the bill argued that the current system of staggered elections spreads resources thin and often leads to electoral fatigue among voters. They also cited examples from other democracies where multiple elections are held simultaneously without compromising efficiency or credibility.
If passed, the bill will significantly alter the conduct of general elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), requiring massive logistical coordination and early preparedness. INEC has yet to issue a formal response to the proposal, though sources within the commission suggest the idea would require a major overhaul of planning timelines and deployment structures.
The bill is still undergoing deliberation at the committee level, with public hearings and stakeholder engagements expected in the coming weeks. If adopted, it would mark one of the most consequential changes to Nigeria’s electoral framework in recent history, setting a new precedent ahead of the 2027 general elections.
