In a recent interview on Channels Television’s Political Paradigm programme, former Edo State Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu disclosed that he never had faith in ex-Governor Godwin Obaseki’s leadership capabilities, even before they assumed office on November 12, 2016.
Shaibu stated that Obaseki, who is not a career politician, was made governor due to the influence of former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Adams Oshiomhole. Despite his initial reservations, Shaibu eventually supported Obaseki out of respect for Oshiomhole’s vision for the state.
Shaibu recalled that during their first term in office, their political structure was dismantled to accommodate Obaseki. However, their second term was marked by a different political atmosphere, which Shaibu described as a time of “godfatherism” in Edo State.
Shaibu’s revelation provides insight into the complexities of Edo State’s politics and the relationships between key figures. It also highlights the challenges faced by Obaseki during his tenure as governor.
