Ibadan Polytechnic Cautions Students Against Planned Protest, Urges Parental Intervention Amid Tensions

Authorities at The Polytechnic, Ibadan, have issued a strong warning to students over an alleged plan to stage a protest on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, advising them to reconsider in the interest of peace, institutional harmony, and respect for constituted authority.

In an official statement signed by the Acting Registrar and Secretary to Council, Mr. Joseph Adewumi Ogunjimi, the institution disclosed that intelligence at its disposal indicated that the students were plotting to blockade the campus gates from as early as 6:00 a.m. on the said date, in what appears to be a reaction to recent developments on campus.

The statement described the planned protest as potentially disruptive and warned that any demonstration deemed to undermine the authority of the institution or the government would be treated as a deliberate act of provocation. It further stated that the management would not tolerate any attempt by students to jeopardize public peace or institutional operations.

“The Management warns the students against any protest that will be inimical to the interest of the institution and the government, as such action will not be tolerated. Any action against the interest of the institution or government will be considered as an affront by the authorities,” the statement read.

Parents and guardians were also called upon to intervene urgently by counseling their wards against participating in any unlawful gathering or protest, which could attract disciplinary consequences. The school stressed that it remains committed to dialogue and peaceful engagement but would not hesitate to act within the law to maintain order.

In anticipation of the protest, the school confirmed that it had mobilised relevant security agencies in collaboration with the institution’s internal security to ensure calm and avert any breakdown of law and order on campus.

The warning follows rising discontent among the student body and other stakeholders over the recent renaming of the institution by the Oyo State Government, a move that has drawn criticism from students, alumni, and members of the public who view the decision as both hasty and controversial.
