IGP Hosts Constitution Review Committee, Harps on National Security Reform

Abuja, June 10, 2025 – The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, on Tuesday played host to the House of Representatives Constitution Review Committee on National Security, as discussions focused on strengthening Nigeria’s internal security architecture through constitutional reform.

The high-level meeting, held at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, brought together senior police officers and federal lawmakers to deliberate on pressing security issues and the role of the Nigerian Police Force in ensuring peace, law, and order across the country.

In his welcome remarks, IGP Egbetokun emphasized the importance of legal and institutional reforms in repositioning the Force for optimal performance. He lauded the committee’s initiative to seek stakeholders’ input and stressed that any constitutional review must reflect the evolving realities of Nigeria’s complex security landscape.

“The Nigerian Police Force stands as the most visible and accessible security institution to the people. As such, reforms that empower our operations, improve accountability, and enhance inter-agency collaboration are not just timely but necessary,” the police chief stated.

Chairman of the Constitution Review Committee, Hon. Idris Wase, reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to fostering a more secure Nigeria through laws that are responsive and forward-looking. He noted that the committee’s engagements with stakeholders like the police would guide the drafting of amendments that truly address gaps in the current security framework.

According to him, “National security is a shared responsibility. Our goal is to ensure that the constitution supports a system where law enforcement is well-equipped, professionally run, and strategically guided.”

Discussions during the session also touched on state policing, funding models, community engagement, and human rights protections in the context of security enforcement. IGP Egbetokun reiterated the Force’s readiness to work with the legislature and other relevant bodies to realize lasting reforms.

The meeting marks one of several consultative visits the Constitution Review Committee is undertaking as part of its mandate to overhaul security provisions in the 1999 Constitution and respond to Nigeria’s current and future safety needs.
