INEC Cautions Nigerians Against Duplicate Registration Ahead of Nationwide Voter Enrolment Exercise

ABUJA, NIGERIA

As preparations intensify for the commencement of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise across the country, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a strong warning to citizens, urging them to avoid engaging in multiple registrations. The electoral body stressed that any form of duplicate enrolment is illegal and carries severe consequences under the law.

In an official statement, governance and democracy desk, INEC reiterated that the forthcoming CVR exercise is specifically designed to accommodate eligible Nigerians who are yet to register, including those who have just turned 18, individuals who have relocated and need to transfer their registration, as well as those whose Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) have been lost or damaged.

The Commission reminded the public that its systems are equipped with biometric verification technology capable of detecting duplicate entries, warning that those who attempt to register more than once will not only have their entries voided but may also face legal prosecution for electoral fraud.

INEC further explained that the success of the CVR depends largely on the cooperation and honesty of citizens, especially in a democratic environment where credible voter data remains the foundation of free, fair, and transparent elections. The Commission urged community leaders, civil society organisations, and political parties to support voter education efforts and help spread awareness about the dangers of multiple registration.

With the 2027 general elections gradually drawing closer, INEC has expressed its commitment to conducting a comprehensive and efficient voter registration process, using both digital and physical platforms to reach citizens across rural and urban areas. The electoral umpire emphasised that credible voter rolls begin with responsible civic behaviour.

Nigerians are encouraged to verify their status through INEC’s online portal before participating in the CVR to avoid unnecessary complications. As the nation braces for another democratic cycle, the electoral body’s message remains clear, register once, vote once, and let the ballot speak with integrity.
