INEC Confirms 19 New Applications for Political Party Registration, Total Now 171

September 4, 2025 | Abuja, Nigeria
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed that it has received 19 additional applications from political associations seeking registration as political parties. This brings the total number of applications before the commission to 171.

INEC explained that the applications are being reviewed in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the Electoral Act 2022, which outline the conditions any association must meet before being recognized as a political party in Nigeria.

The Commission emphasized that while it welcomes new political actors into the democratic space, only associations that meet strict requirements—including a national outlook, verifiable offices across the federation, and compliance with financial disclosure regulations—will be approved.

INEC further noted that the process remains ongoing and that it will continue to update Nigerians on developments, stressing that its commitment to deepening democracy and ensuring credible elections remains unwavering.

If approved, the new parties will join the existing political platforms ahead of future elections, potentially reshaping Nigeria’s political landscape.
