The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially published the personal particulars of candidates vying for the 2025 Anambra State Governorship Election, following the successful completion of party primaries across the state.
According to a statement from the Commission, sixteen political parties met the deadline for the submission of nomination forms for their governorship and deputy governorship candidates. The online portal dedicated for the submission of forms closed automatically at exactly 6:00 pm on Monday, 12th May 2025, in accordance with the election timetable earlier released by the Commission.
As required under Section 29(3) of the Electoral Act 2022, and in line with item 4 on INEC’s Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the Anambra election, the Commission has displayed the credentials and other relevant documents of all submitted candidates at its State Headquarters in Awka as well as its offices across the 21 Local Government Areas in the state. The documents on display include Form EC9, academic qualifications, and other particulars submitted by the candidates and their running mates.
INEC is urging citizens, especially stakeholders and members of political parties, to diligently scrutinise the published documents. The Commission emphasized that aspirants who participated in the primaries and possess credible evidence that any candidate has presented false information in their documents have the legal right to seek redress in a Federal High Court. This provision is clearly outlined in Section 29(5) of the Electoral Act 2022.
The publication of candidates’ details is a critical step in the electoral process, ensuring transparency and providing an opportunity for public oversight before the final list of contestants is released. INEC has also confirmed that the final list of governorship candidates will be published on Monday, 9th June 2025. This complies with Section 32(1) of the Electoral Act, which mandates that the list be released no later than 150 days before the scheduled election day.
The Anambra State Governorship Election is part of the Commission’s continuous efforts to uphold credible, inclusive, and transparent elections. As the political atmosphere begins to heat up, stakeholders are watching closely to see how parties and candidates navigate the next phases leading to the poll.
