The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that 14 associations have been shortlisted from a pool of 171 applicants seeking registration as political parties in Nigeria.
INEC disclosed that the screening process was guided by constitutional provisions and the Electoral Act, which set out stringent requirements for groups aspiring to attain party status. The Commission noted that the shortlisted associations successfully scaled through preliminary assessments and will undergo further scrutiny before final approval is granted.
While the names of the shortlisted groups were not immediately released, INEC explained that the exercise forms part of its broader responsibility to ensure that only credible, viable, and law-abiding organizations are permitted into Nigeria’s political space.
The development comes as the country prepares for upcoming electoral cycles, with observers stressing that the proliferation of political parties must not compromise electoral integrity or effective governance.
