World number one Aryna Sabalenka has been forced to pull out of the ongoing China Open after sustaining an injury that has ruled her out of the tournament.
Tournament organisers confirmed her withdrawal on Wednesday, describing it as a huge blow to the competition given Sabalenka’s dominant form this season. The Belarusian star had been tipped as one of the favourites for the title, but the setback has now ended her campaign prematurely.
Medical officials at the event disclosed that Sabalenka sustained the injury during a practice session and was advised to rest to avoid aggravating the condition. The nature of the injury has not been fully disclosed, but sources close to her camp suggested it may require weeks of recovery.
Sabalenka, who recently retained her position at the top of the WTA rankings following a series of strong performances, expressed disappointment at her withdrawal, thanking fans for their support and promising to return stronger.
Her absence now opens the field for other contenders, including Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff, who remain in the hunt for the title. Analysts believe the development could alter the dynamics of the women’s singles draw, offering younger players a rare opportunity to advance deep into the tournament.
The China Open continues in Beijing, with top seeds still battling for one of the most prestigious titles on the WTA calendar.
