Int’l Albinism Awareness Day: First Lady Oluremi Tinubu Reaffirms Commitment to Protecting Rights of Persons With Albinism

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has reaffirmed the commitment of the current administration to the protection and empowerment of persons with albinism, as the world marks International Albinism Awareness Day on June 13.

In a statement released to commemorate the occasion, Mrs. Tinubu emphasized the need for inclusion, equal opportunities, and the protection of the fundamental rights of persons with albinism in Nigeria. She decried the discrimination and stigma many of them face and called for a more informed and compassionate society.

Senator Tinubu highlighted ongoing efforts through her Renewed Hope Initiative to support vulnerable groups, including those living with albinism, by improving access to healthcare, education, and social inclusion.

She also pledged to continue working with relevant stakeholders, civil society organizations, and government agencies to create an enabling environment that respects diversity and upholds the dignity and rights of all Nigerians, regardless of physical differences.

International Albinism Awareness Day is observed annually to celebrate the achievements of persons with albinism and to raise global awareness of the challenges they face. The 2025 theme is “10 Years of IAAD: A Decade of Collective Progress.”
