Israel Signals Firm Intent on Hostage Deal and Ceasefire in Gaza, Cites ‘Positive Signs’

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, speaking on Wednesday in Tallinn, Estonia, has affirmed his country’s commitment to securing both a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages, stating that Israel has already agreed to U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff’s terms. Saar described the situation as showing “some positive signs” and confirmed the immediate commencement of proximity talks is the goal

Saar reiterated Israel’s position that Hamas remains ultimately responsible for igniting the war on October 7, 2023, and for its continuation, adding that sustained international pressure on the militant group is essential

The framework advocated by U.S. President Donald Trump and envoy Witkoff includes a proposed 60‑day ceasefire in exchange for partial release of hostages—potentially 10 living and some deceased—alongside Israeli concessions such as phased withdrawal and enhanced humanitarian aid into Gaza

On the Palestinian side, Hamas confirmed it is currently reviewing new ceasefire proposals put forward by mediators Egypt and Qatar, while emphasising its demand that any agreement must include an Israeli military withdrawal from Gaza

As both Israel and Hamas engage in indirect negotiations, optimism is cautiously growing among diplomats. Israel’s public declaration of seriousness, combined with Hamas’s willingness to examine proposals, suggests a fragile window for resolution could be opening—even as Oslo strains persist from hostilities that have claimed tens of thousands of lives since 2023 .
