Global tech innovator and former Twitter CEO, Jack Dorsey, has introduced a groundbreaking communication platform named “Bitchat,” a messaging application that operates entirely without internet access.
Bitchat leverages Bluetooth technology to enable secure, real-time messaging between users within proximity — eliminating the need for mobile data, Wi-Fi, or any internet connectivity. The app is designed to support encrypted peer-to-peer messaging, especially in areas with limited or no internet access.
Dorsey, known for championing decentralised technology and privacy-focused innovation, announced the launch of Bitchat during a live demo event in San Francisco on Monday. He described the app as “a revolutionary step towards digital independence and offline connectivity.”
“This is not just a chat app. It’s a digital lifeline for disconnected communities, protesters, travellers, and anyone looking to escape the surveillance-heavy internet infrastructure,” Dorsey explained.
Tech analysts believe Bitchat could be a game-changer in regions plagued by poor internet infrastructure or where digital blackouts are frequent. It also poses significant implications for privacy advocates and those seeking alternative means of communication away from traditional internet-based platforms.
As of Tuesday morning, the app is currently available in beta for Android users, with an iOS version expected later this month. Bitchat joins a growing list of offline-first apps pushing for decentralised communication and technological inclusivity.
