British tennis star Jack Draper silenced doubters by capturing his first ATP Masters 1000 title at Indian Wells on Sunday, defeating world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz in a thrilling final. The 23-year-old’s breakthrough victory propels him into the world’s top 10 for the first time, marking a dramatic turnaround just eight weeks after an injury-marred Australian Open exit.
Draper’s path to glory seemed uncertain in January when he retired from a fourth-round Australian Open clash against Alcaraz due to a recurring hip injury. Battling hip tendonitis and relying on painkillers, questions resurfaced about his physical resilience. However, a revamped fitness regimen and mental recalibration under new coach Wayne Ferreira fueled a stunning comeback.
“I’ve worked tirelessly on my body and mindset,” said Draper, now ranked No. 9. “This win proves I belong among the best.”
Draper prioritized recovery and mobility, crediting physio Steve Kotze for enabling him to withstand grueling matches. His improved stamina shone in Indian Wells, where he dropped just one set en route to the title.
After visible nerves led to on-court vomiting during the 2023 US Open semifinals, Draper enlisted a breathing coach. “Staying calm against Alcaraz was pivotal,” he said.
Ferreira sharpened Draper’s net play and footwork, tools he deployed to outmaneuver Alcaraz in decisive moments.
Draper became the first British man to win a Masters title since Andy Murray in 2016. The achievement signals his arrival as a genuine contender for Grand Slam glory, joining past Indian Wells champions like Naomi Osaka and Dominic Thiem who translated Masters success into major triumphs.
While excelling on hard courts, Draper eyes challenges on clay and grass. “I’ve underperformed on clay, but my game’s evolving,” he said. With Wimbledon ahead, his powerful serve and refined aggression could make him a threat.
