Japan Names Kisarazu as Hometown for Nigerians Living and Working in the Country

August 23, 2025 — The Government of Japan has announced Kisarazu City as the official hometown for Nigerians residing and working in the country, in what is being described as a landmark step in strengthening bilateral ties between both nations.

According to the Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the development was disclosed in a statement issued by the Director of Information at the State House, Abiodun Oladunjoye, on Friday.

The initiative, which falls under Japan’s broader strategy of deepening cultural diplomacy, is expected to boost economic growth, cultural integration, and workforce productivity, while also offering Nigerians in Japan a stronger sense of community and belonging.

By designating Kisarazu as a home base, the Japanese Government seeks to promote better collaboration with Nigeria in areas of technology, trade, and people-to-people exchanges.

Analysts believe the move signals Tokyo’s recognition of Nigeria’s growing role in the global economy, while also creating opportunities for Nigerians to contribute to Japan’s labor market and innovation-driven sectors.

The announcement comes just days before the conclusion of the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), where President Tinubu and other African leaders are engaging with Japan and international partners to discuss pathways for sustainable development across the continent.
