Job Scam: Man Bags One-Year Jail Term for Defrauding Jobseeker of ₦1 Million

A man identified as Elvis Simon Okerenyi has been convicted and sentenced to one year imprisonment for fraud after he was found guilty of defrauding a jobseeker of ₦1,000,000 under the guise of offering a fake civil service job.

The convict, who pleaded guilty before the court, admitted to collecting the sum from his victim on the pretext of securing a position in the civil service. His fraudulent scheme came to light after the victim, having received no job offer, reported the matter to authorities.

Following investigations and subsequent prosecution, Okerenyi was arraigned and sentenced after confessing to the crime. The presiding judge emphasized the need for deterrence against employment-related fraud, describing such acts as wicked exploitation of the vulnerable and unemployed.

The court also ordered restitution to the victim, while reminding the public to remain cautious of fraudulent job promises and to verify employment offers through official channels.
