JUST IN: Benue Stakeholders Convene at Government House in Makurdi for Town Hall Meeting with President Tinubu Over State Killings

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, engaged with key stakeholders from Benue State at the Government House in Makurdi to discuss the escalating violence that has claimed over 150 lives in the region. The town hall meeting, convened at the request of the President, brought together Governor Hyacinth Alia, lawmakers, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and security chiefs to deliberate on the persistent insecurity and explore actionable solutions.

The recent surge in violence, particularly the Yelewata massacre, has drawn national and international condemnation. Survivors recounted harrowing tales of gunmen storming villages, opening fire on sleeping residents, and setting homes ablaze. Many victims had previously fled violence in other regions and were sheltering in a local market, which was also destroyed, along with a year’s harvest of staple crops such as rice and yam. The conflict stems from long-standing tensions between local farmers and Fulani herders over land and grazing rights.

During the meeting, President Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to restoring peace and security in Benue State. He emphasized the need for a coordinated approach involving all stakeholders to address the root causes of the conflict and implement sustainable peace initiatives. The President also directed security agencies to intensify efforts in apprehending and prosecuting those responsible for the recent attacks.

Governor Alia expressed gratitude to the President for his prompt response and support. He highlighted the challenges faced by the state, including the displacement of thousands of residents and the destruction of farmlands, which has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis. The Governor appealed for increased federal assistance to facilitate the return of displaced persons to their communities and the rebuilding of affected areas.

The town hall meeting concluded with a renewed commitment from all parties to work collaboratively towards achieving lasting peace in Benue State. President Tinubu assured the people of Benue that the federal government would continue to provide the necessary support to address the security challenges and ensure the safety and well-being of all citizens.

As the situation remains fluid, the federal government has pledged to monitor developments closely and take further action as needed to restore peace and stability to the region.
