Kaduna Begins Partial Implementation of ₦72,000 Minimum Wage for Civil Servants

Kaduna, Nigeria | September 18, 2025

The Kaduna State Government has commenced the partial implementation of the newly approved ₦72,000 minimum wage, starting with civil servants on Grade Levels 1 to 6.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Kaduna State Council, confirmed the development on Thursday, describing it as a welcome step but stressing that the wage adjustment must be extended to all categories of workers without delay.

Speaking at a press briefing, the State NLC Chairman, Ayuba Magaji Suleiman, said the rollout represents the first phase of implementation but pointed out that several groups, including local government staff, teachers, healthcare personnel, and employees of tertiary institutions and parastatals, were yet to be captured.

“We welcome the commencement of the ₦72,000 minimum wage implementation for civil servants in Kaduna State. The government has started with Grade Levels 1–6, but this is only the first phase. We expect the implementation to cover all categories of workers,” Suleiman said.

The union disclosed that the state government had linked full implementation to the conclusion of staff and pension verification exercises, which are expected to be finalised before the end of September.

While applauding the initial progress, the NLC called on the Kaduna State Government to fast-track the process to ensure that all workers benefit from the new wage structure.
