Kalu Urges African-Led Security Initiative in EU Partnership Talks

ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has called for a security framework in Africa that is designed, led, and driven by Africans as part of the continent’s evolving partnership with the European Union (EU).

Kalu made the appeal during a high-level dialogue on Africa-EU relations, where he emphasized that Africa must take ownership of its security architecture rather than relying solely on external interventions. He said that a continent-specific approach, anchored on the realities of Africa’s geopolitical and socio-economic conditions, was key to achieving lasting peace and stability.

“Our partnership with the European Union must prioritise African-led solutions to African challenges. Security in our region must be home-grown, with African nations taking charge of both strategy and execution,” Kalu said.

The Deputy Speaker noted that while the EU remains a valuable development and diplomatic ally, the long-term effectiveness of collaborative efforts depends on mutual respect and the empowerment of African institutions and regional mechanisms.

He stressed the need for deeper cooperation on intelligence sharing, anti-terrorism strategies, and capacity building for African security forces, urging that foreign support should strengthen—not replace—local efforts.

Kalu also advocated for greater investment in youth development, education, and economic empowerment as non-military strategies to reduce insecurity and violent extremism across the continent.

His comments align with increasing calls across Africa for more autonomy in dealing with internal conflicts and security threats, especially in regions battling insurgencies, piracy, and transnational crimes.

The EU-Africa partnership dialogue continues this week, with both sides expected to refine joint policies on governance, economic development, climate action, and migration.
