Kano, July 11, 2025 — The Kano State Coordinating Office of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has announced the seizure of fake and substandard medicines, as well as contaminated food items, valued at over ₦1.3 billion during recent enforcement operations across the state.
The announcement was made on Thursday by the State Coordinator, Mr. Shaba Mohammed, during a media briefing in Kano. He stated that the seizures were the result of a series of intelligence-driven raids carried out between April and June 2025, targeting unregistered outlets and suspected illegal distribution points.
According to Mr. Mohammed, the confiscated items included counterfeit antibiotics, fake antimalarial drugs, expired beverages, and unwholesome packaged foods, all posing serious public health threats.
“We are committed to ensuring that only safe and effective medical and food products are available to the public. These confiscated items could have had disastrous consequences if they had made it to unsuspecting consumers,” he said.
The agency disclosed that several arrests were made in connection with the seizures, with suspects currently undergoing investigation and prosecution. It also warned retailers and distributors to ensure full compliance with regulatory guidelines or face the full wrath of the law.
NAFDAC reiterated its call for increased public vigilance, urging Nigerians to report suspicious drug outlets and food vendors through its whistleblower channels.
The agency has pledged to intensify surveillance, particularly in open drug markets and rural communities, to curb the circulation of harmful substances and safeguard public health in Kano and beyond.
