In a strategic initiative aimed at improving safety and efficiency on Nigeria’s highways, the Katsina Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has partnered with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to conduct a comprehensive re-training programme for commercial and transport drivers within the state.
The collaboration, launched earlier this month, focuses on equipping drivers with enhanced knowledge of road safety regulations, defensive driving techniques, and compliance with customs and border security protocols. This move comes as part of ongoing efforts to reduce accidents, improve the flow of legitimate trade, and strengthen security along major transit routes in Katsina and beyond.
Speaking at the inauguration of the programme, the Katsina Customs Area Controller highlighted the critical role of drivers in the nation’s economic and security landscape. He emphasized that the re-training is designed to instill discipline, raise awareness about the dangers of reckless driving, and ensure that drivers adhere strictly to legal standards while transporting goods across borders.
“Our drivers are frontline partners in our mission to secure the nation’s borders and facilitate lawful trade. It is imperative they understand the responsibilities that come with this role, including road safety and compliance with customs regulations,” the Controller said.
The FRSC, represented by its Katsina State Sector Commander, pledged to provide technical support and expertise throughout the training sessions. The agency also underscored its commitment to working closely with Customs and other security agencies to promote safer roads and reduce traffic-related incidents.
Drivers participating in the programme have expressed appreciation for the refresher course, acknowledging that the training will not only enhance their skills but also improve their professionalism and livelihood.
The Katsina Customs-FRSC partnership reflects a growing trend among Nigerian security agencies to adopt collaborative and preventive approaches in addressing complex challenges that impact border security, trade efficiency, and public safety.
