Senior Advocate Festus Keyamo has strongly criticized former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar for stepping down from his political party just one day after the passing of ex-President Muhammadu Buhari. In a pointed statement, Keyamo questioned the timing of Atiku’s resignation, describing it as “insensitive” and “ill-timed.” He argued that in moments of national mourning, political figures should display restraint and solidarity, rather than pursue personal or partisan changes.
Keyamo recalled the widespread sentiment of grief that swept Nigeria following Buhari’s death—a leader who, despite controversies, remains a significant figure in the country’s recent history. “This is not the right moment to be switching allegiances,” Keyamo emphasized, stressing that the country’s attention was still focused on commemorating Buhari’s legacy and offering condolences to his family and supporters.
He further warned that Atiku’s decision could be interpreted as opportunistic, suggesting it might deepen political divisions at a time when Nigerians are seeking unity in mourning. Keyamo urged that defection decisions, especially by prominent figures like Atiku, be made with careful consideration of national sentiment.
