Senator Ireti Kingibe, representing the Federal Capital Territory, has pledged her commitment to addressing the sexual harassment allegation raised by Kogi Central lawmaker Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. This announcement was made on Friday through a statement shared on her official X handle, titled “My Unwavering Stance for Justice and Women’s Rights.”
Kingibe’s declaration comes two weeks after she criticized Akpoti-Uduaghan for her reaction to a seating reassignment in the Senate, which Kingibe had previously described as an overreaction and a breach of Senate rules. However, she has now expressed her readiness to champion the investigation into the sexual harassment claim once it is formally presented to the Senate.
In her statement, Kingibe clarified that her earlier remarks were not intended to undermine Akpoti-Uduaghan’s allegations but to emphasize her initial unawareness of the situation. She reaffirmed her dedication to combating all forms of violence and harassment against women and girls, stating, “As a sitting Senator, I will always defend the truth and fight to right all wrongs. Over the years, sexual harassment and assaults have become commonplace in our homes and workplaces. Every Nigerian, irrespective of gender, ethnicity, or religion, should be committed to the struggle to end it as it affects all genders.”
Kingibe called for a transparent and impartial investigation into the allegations, emphasizing the need for justice, fairness, and equity for all individuals, regardless of their gender, position, or social standing. She also reiterated her commitment to advancing gender equity in political representation and governance, highlighting her focus on the 35% Gender Inclusion Bill and the establishment of special seats for women in leadership roles.
The senator assured her constituents, particularly women and her political supporters, of her unwavering dedication to good governance and the fight for a better Nigeria. She urged the public to disregard any misinformation suggesting she condones sexual harassment in any form, whether in the Senate or elsewhere.
Kingibe’s renewed stance underscores her commitment to justice and gender equity, signaling a significant step toward addressing issues of harassment and promoting inclusivity in governance.
