Kogi Government Inaugurates 26-Member Committee to Combat Illicit Drug Abuse

Lokoja, Nigeria | September 6, 2025 – The Kogi State Government has established a 26-member Illicit Drugs Control Committee as part of renewed efforts to curb the growing menace of drug abuse and trafficking in the state.

The committee, inaugurated by Governor Usman Ododo, is mandated to develop effective strategies for prevention, treatment, enforcement, and public enlightenment on the dangers of substance abuse. It brings together representatives from key security agencies, health professionals, traditional rulers, civil society, and youth groups.

Governor Ododo said the move underscores his administration’s resolve to protect communities from the devastating impact of illicit drugs, which have been linked to rising crime rates, insecurity, and social decay. He emphasized that the committee must work closely with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and other stakeholders to ensure a holistic approach to the problem.

Chairman of the committee assured that members would deliver on their mandate, pledging to promote rehabilitation initiatives and community-driven awareness campaigns to discourage drug use, particularly among young people.

The governor further called on parents, schools, religious institutions, and community leaders to join hands with the government in addressing the root causes of drug abuse, stressing that combating the menace requires collective responsibility.
