Lokoja, August 27, 2025 — The Kogi State Government has announced a major expansion of its health insurance scheme while committing fresh investments in medical training and infrastructure to improve healthcare delivery across the state.
Governor Yahaya Bello said the initiative is part of ongoing reforms to make healthcare more accessible and affordable for residents, particularly vulnerable groups. He noted that the state is working to scale up enrollment under the Kogi State Health Insurance Agency (KGSHIA), ensuring wider coverage and financial protection for households against medical costs.
The governor explained that alongside the insurance expansion, the state is channeling funds into training health workers and upgrading facilities to meet rising demand. “We are strengthening human capacity in our hospitals, equipping our primary healthcare centres, and ensuring that our citizens can get quality medical attention without financial hardship,” he said.
Officials of the Ministry of Health disclosed that new investments include the rehabilitation of secondary health facilities, the provision of modern diagnostic equipment, and partnerships with federal institutions to enhance specialized training for medical professionals.
Residents expressed optimism that the reforms will bridge gaps in service delivery, especially in rural communities where access to affordable healthcare remains limited.
Health experts say the dual focus on insurance coverage and workforce development reflects a holistic approach that could serve as a model for other states seeking to achieve universal health coverage.
