Kogi Imposes Daytime Ban on Heavy-Duty Vehicles to Reduce Road Accidents

Lokoja | July 29, 2025 — The Kogi State Government has announced a new policy restricting the daytime movement of heavy-duty vehicles across the state in a decisive move to curb the rising rate of road accidents.

The restriction, which takes immediate effect, limits the movement of trailers, tankers, and other articulated trucks to nighttime hours only. This development was disclosed by the state Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Salihu Abubakar, during a press briefing in Lokoja on Monday.

Abubakar explained that the decision followed a series of fatal road crashes involving heavy-duty trucks, many of which occurred during peak daytime traffic. According to him, the new measure aims to safeguard commuters, reduce traffic congestion, and ensure smoother transportation within the state.

“Kogi State has witnessed too many tragic accidents involving heavy-duty vehicles during the day. This proactive step is meant to protect lives and ease the burden on our roads during daylight hours,” he said.

The commissioner added that enforcement would be carried out in collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Nigeria Police, and other security agencies. Defaulters, he noted, will face stiff penalties, including impoundment and legal action.

He urged logistics companies, haulage operators, and independent drivers to comply with the directive, stressing that the safety of all road users is paramount.

The policy has received mixed reactions from residents and transport unions, with some commending the government’s safety-first approach, while others have raised concerns about the potential impact on supply chains and late-night security.

Despite these concerns, the government remains firm in its position, emphasizing that the measure is temporary and will be reviewed periodically based on results and stakeholder feedback.
