Ilorin, Kwara State – June 14, 2025
Food prices across Kwara State have seen a notable decline, following increased investments in agriculture by the state government and private sector players.
The development has brought relief to residents who had long grappled with rising food costs due to inflation and supply chain challenges. Markets in Ilorin, Offa, and other major towns in the state have recorded price drops in key staples like rice, maize, yam, and vegetables.
Market surveys conducted during the week revealed that a bag of local rice now sells for as low as ₦32,000, down from ₦40,000 in April, while a tuber of yam goes for between ₦800 and ₦1,200, depending on the size — a drop from ₦1,500.
Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Oloruntoyin Thomas, attributed the positive trend to ongoing support for smallholder farmers, increased mechanisation, and access to improved seedlings.
“Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s administration has been intentional about ensuring food security. Through partnerships with agro-investors and direct interventions like subsidised inputs, we are now seeing the results,” she said.
Farmers in Edu, Kaiama, and Asa LGAs also confirmed that increased support had boosted their productivity this planting season.
Residents welcomed the price drop, urging the government to sustain its support programmes to prevent future shocks. Experts believe if the trend continues, Kwara could serve as a food basket for neighbouring states in the near future.
