Ilorin, Nigeria – June 15, 2025
Some officials of the Kwara State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board have come under fire following allegations of defrauding intending pilgrims by disbursing only $5 each as Basic Travel Allowance (BTA), instead of the federally approved $500.
The incident has sparked outrage among affected pilgrims and their families, who have called for immediate investigation and justice. Several pilgrims reportedly expressed confusion and disappointment upon receiving the paltry sum at the point of departure for the 2025 Hajj pilgrimage.
According to sources, the irregularity was discovered shortly before boarding, prompting concerns over the transparency of the board’s financial operations and its adherence to pilgrimage regulations.
The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) is yet to release an official statement, but a senior official hinted that the matter would be investigated promptly, and any official found culpable would face disciplinary actions.
Meanwhile, the Kwara State Government has reportedly been notified of the development and is expected to issue a formal position in the coming days.
Pilgrims and civil society groups have urged both NAHCON and anti-corruption agencies to intervene, recover stolen funds, and ensure such abuse of trust does not reoccur.
