The Labour Party (LP) National Executive Council (NEC) convened at the party’s National Headquarters on May 2, 2025, to deliberate on crucial issues affecting the party’s unity, leadership, and electoral prospects. The meeting, which was attended by key party leaders, reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the principles of internal democracy and strengthening the party ahead of upcoming elections.
One of the major resolutions from the meeting was a strong endorsement of the Julius Abure-led National Working Committee (NWC). Despite internal challenges and recent court rulings that have created tensions within the party, the NEC expressed unwavering support for the leadership, emphasizing the need to adhere to the party’s constitution. “The Labour Party remains committed to democratic principles, and we stand behind the leadership of Julius Abure to steer the party towards success,” said a senior party official following the meeting.
The NEC also took decisive action in response to allegations of anti-party activities. The meeting issued stern warnings to members accused of undermining the party’s unity, particularly targeting former presidential candidate Peter Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti. The party made it clear that any actions detrimental to its integrity would not be tolerated, and those found guilty could face disciplinary measures in line with the party’s constitution.
Another significant development from the NEC meeting was the reorganization within the House of Representatives Caucus. Barrister Ben Etanabene was appointed as the new Caucus Leader, replacing Honourable Victor Ogene. This change is part of the party’s effort to ensure stronger legislative representation and greater cohesion within the party’s ranks.
Looking forward, the NEC laid out plans for the upcoming Anambra State governorship election and the 2027 general elections. The party emphasized its commitment to promoting good governance and upholding the core values of the Labour Party, while remaining open to alliances with other political entities that share similar objectives. However, the NEC also cautioned against actions that could divide the party or weaken its prospects in future elections.
The resolutions from the May 2 NEC meeting reflect the Labour Party’s determination to overcome internal challenges and present a united front as it prepares for the electoral contests ahead.
