LAGOS, June 5 — Nigeria’s commercial capital Lagos has received three new train sets, totaling 12 coaches, to boost capacity and improve commuter experience on its flagship Blue Line Rail, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said on Wednesday.
The delivery marks a key step in the state’s ongoing efforts to modernize its urban transit system and ease traffic congestion in the city of more than 20 million people.
“With these new train sets, we expect shorter wait times and more comfortable trips for Blue Line passengers,” Sanwo-Olu said in a statement. “This is part of our broader strategy to make daily commuting in Lagos more reliable and efficient.”

The Blue Line currently operates on a 13-kilometer corridor between Marina and Mile 2. Work is under way to extend the line westward to Okokomaiko, with completion targeted for 2026.
Lagos authorities have prioritized rail development as part of an integrated transportation master plan designed to reduce road congestion, lower emissions, and support the city’s economic growth.
Urban mobility has long been a challenge in Lagos, where heavy road traffic imposes economic costs and strains public infrastructure. The expansion of rail services is seen as critical to improving movement across the sprawling metropolis.
