Lagos Advances Toward Malaria Elimination on World Malaria Day 2025

Lagos State has reaffirmed its commitment to eliminating malaria as it observed World Malaria Day 2025. The theme for this year’s observance, “Malaria Ends with Us: Reinvest, Reimagine, Reignite,” highlights the need for sustained action, innovation, and collaboration in the fight against the disease.

In his address, the Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, revealed that Lagos had successfully reduced its malaria prevalence from 15% in 2010 to just 1.3% in 2025. This significant reduction positions the state on the path to malaria pre-elimination, with the goal of reducing prevalence to less than 1%. Abayomi emphasized the importance of initiatives such as the Smart Health Information Platform (SHIP) in ensuring accurate diagnosis and treatment of malaria cases. He also urged residents to continue sleeping under insecticide-treated nets, maintain clean environments, and seek prompt medical care when experiencing fever.

The Lagos State Government, in partnership with organizations like Ikeja Electric, distributed free malaria testing, anti-malaria medication, and insecticide-treated mosquito nets to residents as part of efforts to prevent and treat the disease. These activities also served to engage communities and raise awareness about malaria prevention.

On the national front, Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to eliminating malaria by 2030. The Federal Government announced plans to expand malaria vaccination programs and distribute insecticide-treated nets across various states. Additionally, the government has initiated a pilot program of Larval Source Management in six states, including Lagos, to target and eliminate mosquito breeding grounds.

As Lagos continues to make strides in reducing malaria prevalence, the combined efforts of the government, communities, and partners remain critical in achieving a malaria-free future for Nigeria.
